1) Never provide a recruiter or job company with your credit card number, bank account number or your bank PIN number. If ever this type of information was required it would be exceptional circumstances and very far down the application route. Either way, it would be after a face to face interview and even then I am struggling to imagine why an employer would ever want your Pin number! Many job applications will want you to provide them with a Social Security number and your date of birth. However, this information is usually asked for on your first in person interview, it is rare for sensitive information to be requested prior to an in person interview.
2) Any contact from an unfamiliar recruitment advisor or potential employer should be treated with suspicion. Get any name, company and their phone number and do some research about them, before giving any private details or your CV.
3) If you post your CV online, be it for an actual job application or just speculatively, make sure you read the Jobs site's privacy policy to see how your information will be used. It is good if they declare that any information is not shared with a third party.... although you should still be wary. It may be a good idea to have two versions of your CV, one with a disposable email address like a hotmail one and with no sensitive information, whilst the other has your profile in more depth. This way, employers can have their appetite wetted, and contact you if they are interested. The trick is to make the CV look enticing and also be helpful to an employer, without giving away sensitive info.
4) Be very very cautious with anyone who asks you for money in exchange for finding you a new career or vacancy. You should never have to pay for searching for a job, only. If you have sought the services of a career coach or head hunter, resume and CV writer or interview coach then check references and get the agreed fee in writing. Search the net for all your options because much of the 'coaching' advice is available free.... like here!
5) Work from home scams that require money before you can start working, for equipment or training, is probably a scam. Hits: 0
