Contract and contracting jobs

Being a Contractor in the UK is very different from being an employee for a company. The general description of a Contractor is someone who is brought in or performs from their own office for a fixed period a specific project. Contracting is all about selling your skills and time which is usually paid by the hour. Companies like to use contractors in order to lower their own overheads and not be bound by the responsibilities of having permanent staff. Some projects are only done once a year, so having a full time employee is pointless and this is where the self employed freelancer comes in and performs the contract. Thus the company avoids sick pay, employer's national insurance, holiday pay or eventually redundancy pay.

Advantages of being a self employed freelance contractor is that you have control over your work and where you want to work. Contractors are usually paid more than employees working with them and can take holidays when they want. For students and graduates looking for freelance contract jobs the longterm advantages are huge. The graduate gets experience in many different lines of work or offices, which not only helps with the CV but also gives them a wide work experience. This can help them eventually choose the right career for themselves.

There are benefits also in paying less tax and building up a large range of skills making you able to become a very unique worker and ripe for consultancy jobs later on. As a contact worker you will obviously have less security than permanent employees although company employment law can offer some protection if you have a regular long term contract. We offer no legal advice so please check this out if it become an issue.

What companies looking for contractors want...
The main common skills a contractor will be looking for is for the candidate to be able to go from job to job and adapt to the different working conditions, the different tools. The candidate must fit in quickly, be clean and pleasant and easily forge new working relationships. Experienced self employed contractors can have a wealth of knowledge which makes them very useful for both permanent management and permanent employees. However, the contractor must be able to convey this knowledge without being patronising or over critical of the current methods employed. A good contractor will be able to see new contract opportunities as he or she moves from job to job and will keep a good database of contacts. These in themselves can be useful in helping companies.
